this topic of burnout in executives and their team's coming up a lot lately. the “emotional pandemic” and exec energy will be the #1 challenge execs face over the next 10+ years.
how can execs keep up their own energy, and help their team deal with burnout/energy?
i was burned out (to a crisp!) during 2016-19. we had two babies, work was a slog plus we moved to the UK.
i was drowning.
now, i can breathe air again. i’m more optimistic than i have been in 5-10(?) years. i still have my sucky days/weeks of course, but those are blips.
what helped the most:
who: people with aligned values. i left my old business and am more intentional about who i work with, whether on my team or clients. energy vampires.
what: less mundane work, more work that feels high-value/enjoyable. i stopped implementing outbound projects / tactics (instead i refer out to other firms), and am advising CROs/CEOs on go-to-market / sales strategies.
how: less doing it mostly myself, now more offering insights when i can, and when i can’t - connecting execs to other like-minded execs in similar seats.
these didn’t happen overnight. it was in the works for a couple years, with dramatic changes clicking in this year (2021).
small/no changes:
where: same (working from home), though i’m in a new city.
when: some fewer hours, but i’ve been working remotely for 10+ years so it’s mostly the same.
why: to always have closer relationships with myself, my wife and family; which includes making enough money to feed the big family beast.
for me, it’s all about the people people people. the type of people i work with, helping them amplify their results with less work (more energy), and introducing them to other execs.
for you - what / whom are you called to focus on? where’s your unique genius?
how can you delegate or delete more low-value work that sucks your energy?
